Bundaleer Retreat

Place of Green Trees

Environment

"Bundaleer" is believed to mean "place of green trees" in the native Bundjalung tribal dialect.

With just four studio cabins, sleeping upto 3 people, and most suitable for couples only, Bundaleer Retreat has been established as an eco-tourist resort, with careful consideration of the environment, and environmentally sustainable principles in place.

  • Situated on 6.4 hectares (15 acres) of coastal and wallum heath with paper bark and ti tree groves dotted throughout the property, we have installed state of the art, environmentally friendly facilities designed to reduce the impact of our activities on local biosystems.
  • Pole frame construction reduces the "footprint" of the cabins, and the need for chemical spraying. Cabins are solar passive orientated, with window louvres for ventilation, wall and ceiling insulation, and ceiling fans and gas heaters for indoor temperature control.
  • Gas hot water for bathroom and kitchen facilities reduces demand on fossil fuel generated electricity supply.
  • Water is supplied by rainwater gathered from the rooftops of all buildings and stored in our 255,000 litre on-site tank, which is then filtered through five control systems prior to use.
  • A 40 person Taylex deluxe on-site sewerage treatment system has been installed, with treated water finally reaching our own wetland billabong, which provides an irresistible habitat for frogs, aquatic species, birds and other native fauna and flora.
  • Additionally, a solar generation system is being developed to provide fully independent renewable electrical energy to the property.
  • Self Guided Walks. A walking path is being developed through the property, with plenty of chances for observers to see native animals and birds along the way.  As opportunity permits, we'll create bird watching and other native species lists, and interpretive signage for the walks.
